ModSquadHockey

ModSquadHockey is a world-wide hockey community that focuses on the equipment used to play the sport. It is the biggest website of its kind, and through its growth it has made big annual events part of its operation that I have been attending since 2008.

I had done a few random graphics for them to be used as wallpapers, but then was tasked with creating event logos that would be used in promotion as well as with hockey uniforms for the corresponding event. The first logo I created was for their Winterfest event, which is held annually in Michigan the first week of December.

After numerous successful Winterfest were under their belt, an annual summer event joined the fun and Summer Jam was born. Unlike Winterfest, Summer Jam’s location changes each year, which led to location-specific elements being utilized in the event logos.

While the previous Summer Jam logos were designed to be used with dye-sublimation instead of embroidery which allowed for use of gradients, the 2013 Summer Jam logo wound up being embroidered and required a few tweaks to work.

2014 marked the 10th anniversary of ModSquadHockey’s launch, and I was given the nod to create a logo to commemorate the milestone. The logo was used on the website as well as in the form of patches in event uniforms.

For 2015’s Summer Jam, I switched up the logo with a new wordmark that I made from scratch and elected to use a more symmetrical and visually balanced overall shape for the logo. I also simplified the embroidered logo to improve legibility and overall cleanliness.
